Economic and Environmental Impacts of Pasture Nutrient Management, Various studies indicate that highly intensive livestock stocking of pasture lands could be a significant source of agricultural nutrient losses. As part of the LFRW study, pasture nutrient management options were investigated using the CEEOT-LP modeling system. The results of the study support the hypothesis that nutrient losses, particularly phosphorus losses, could be reduced by more judicious commercial fertilizer use on those pasture operations in addition to stocking density adjustments. Desirable reductions in phosphorus losses were obtained when livestock stocking rates were adjusted so that manure phosphorus deposition rates did not exceed forage phosphorus requirements. Farmers would incur moderate costs under some of these options primarily because of the need to purchase additional pasture land.  Journal of Range Management 56(3): 218-226, May 2003.

Livestock and the Environment: Precedents for Runoff Policy: Policy Options-CEEOT-LP, The Lake Fork Reservoir in northeast Texas is home to numerous small, pasture-based dairy operations. This paper presents modeling results from the application of the Comprehensive Economic and Environmental Optimization Tool-Livestock and Poultry (CEEOT-LP). CEEOT-LP was used to assess environmental impacts from the pasture-based dairy operations and provide insight into the economic impacts of environmental policies on small operations. In addition, this study provided an opportunity to apply the CEEOT-LP modeling framework in a different geographic area.
