Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek WPP Advisory Committee Meeting to be held in Belton

Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek Watershed Stakeholder Advisory Committee to Meet on May 9, 2017.

The Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek Watershed Stakeholder Advisory Committee will meet Tuesday May 9th in Belton regarding the Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek Watershed Protection Plan.  The meeting will be from 10:30 am to noon at the Central Texas Council of Governments Offices at 2180 North Main Street in Belton.

The Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek watershed is located in Bell County and encompasses portions of the cities of Belton, Harker Heights, Killeen, Nolanville, and the Fort Hood Military Reservation.  Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek was first listed as impaired and not meeting state water quality standards due to elevated bacteria concentrations in the creek on the 1996 Texas Water Quality Inventory and 303(d) List.  The most recent 303(d) List for 2014 continues to list Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek as impaired for bacteria.  Concerns for elevated nutrients were also noted in 2010 and continue in the 2014 assessment of the Texas surface water quality.

The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) are partnering with stakeholders in the Nolan Creek/South Nolan Creek watershed to protect and improve the area’s water quality through development of a watershed protection plan (WPP).  Stakeholder involvement is crucial in developing a WPP that will comprehensively address all water quality impairments and concerns.

This upcoming meeting will include a presentation by John Rigdon, Director of Planning & Design with the Waller Creek Conservancy, providing on overview of park design along Waller Creek in Austin.  Anne McFarland with the Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER) will provide an update on water quality monitoring and facilitate a discussion on sampling locations for targeting sources.

This project is funded through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
